Many homeowners don’t feel super secure in their homes knowing that just a spring-loaded doorknob and small interior lock is keeping intruders from entering. One way to repair this is to get a deadbolt installed.
Small yet mighty, it will make your home safer by incorporating a more powerful, more protected steel lock onto the inside that could only be opened with a key from the outside. These are relatively inexpensive–and certainly less expensive than the cost of replacement items stolen during a break-in!
When you call a locksmith and request a deadbolt installation on your house’s exterior doors, then here is the process you may anticipate.
Finding the right location
The first thing that the locksmith will do is locate the suitable location for your deadbolt on your exterior door. Normally, these are installed around six inches above the doorknob.
Once the correct place is marked, the locksmith will drill a cylindrical hole through the entirety of the doorway, directly consistent with this doorknob below it.
After the cylinder hole is cut, a fresh hole known as the bolt hole will be drilled perpendicular to the original hole to permit the bolt to go through.
Preparing for the hardware
The faceplate must sit flush with the door when it’s installed correctly. The faceplate can then be screwed firmly to the face of the doorway, followed closely with the cylinder lock inside the bigger hole.
Together with the locking mechanism set up, the locksmith may shut the door to determine where the deadbolt lines upon the doorjamb. Then, the attack plate, or part of this deadbolt that enters the doorjamb, may be marked and ready.
A pit to the deadbolt will have to be drilled . Then a segment round the holes could be chiseled out, like the faceplate, to enable the strike plate to sit with the doorjamb. Lastly, the strike plate may be fastened with screws.
Double-checking the lock
Once all of the hardware is installed, your locksmith should test the deadbolt using keys and attempt to wiggle the door and lock to see if anything is loose.
The deadbolt must slide in the strike plate gap easily with no sticking, but shouldn’t be quite as loose or ill-fitting it can be hauled out with drive.
When everything is analyzed, you’ll be prepared to enjoy the extra security of your home offered by your brand new Dead Bolt!
